Go Configure

You see the advertisements on TV and in the newspapers all the time. A new power tool with 10 attachments that can cut, drill, sand, grind, stir paint, etc. A multi-purpose tool to cover any handyman’s need. It can even be adjusted for left hand or right hand operation.  Then there is the new Baby stroller that converts to a car seat or a booster chair in easy step. Multiple uses for similar devices are common and extremely efficient.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems was founded. It produced a single commercial grade HEPA and Carbon based fan powered air filtration system that originally was designed for the commercial market. It was a single piece unit  with a 12″ diameter inlet ring and 10″ diameter outlet ring. Looking at the front of the unit ( two access doors) the discharge ring was on the left. This was the only configuration available at that time. In addition the unit incorporated a single speed, 1/3 HP induction motor, capacitor start.

Because the model 600H was being used in a partial by-pass concept attached to existing HVAC return air ducts, the original configuration prevented it from being used on HVAC systems where the installation of the 600H had to be used with a right hand discharge. This meant turning the unit completely around preventing any access to the top door where the prefilter, HEPA and Carbon media filters were housed.

To combat this problem the 600H unit was redesigned and split into two sections. The top and bottom were symmetrical so they could be rotated to give best inlet, discharge location as well as best access to the filter section. In addition, splitting the unit into two sections allowed for easier shipping by UPS of the systems.

As the demand for the system grew, so did the need to have a larger, more powerful unit to meet the needs of the commercial market. The need for larger systems coupled with a more efficient and effective electric drive system required some significant modifications. The 1200H and 2000H units were designed and built with similar configurations to the 600H. These units used larger motors but were also split into two sections to adapt more easily to any duct work or stand-alone use configuration.

The need for a unit to be a straight-through air flow device required the addition of a 600, 1200 and 2000 series unit with this straight through configuration. This allowed for multiple configurations of the same unit. The next and biggest change came in the use of the new ECM, digitally controlled motors. These new motors were rated at 120/240v, 50/60 Hz and could operate with a number of 24 volt input devices allowing for incremental air flow adjustments and the ability to be used anywhere in the world.

The addition of the new portable HPS350 and HPS500 units rounded out the product line which now makes Pure Air Systems one of the most complete lines of HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems in the world. Any application, any configuration, any way you want to install the unit, the PAS systems will meet your requirements. Power, performance, reliability and conformity.

Optimus Prime

The Transformer series of films based on the Hasbro toys that change from vehicles and planes into robots or “Autobots” as they are called, has become one of the more successful movie franchises in the last 10 years. Optimus Prime is the leader of the good guys against the evil doers lead by Megatron.  This battle is made more interesting because there are humans involved in the conflict interaction.

Transformation or transformed are words we use often to describe a major change in a persons attitude, the rehabilitation of a house or structure or the beautification of a park or previously blighted area. It is sometimes used to describe the performance of a product or service that completely changes or modifies a certain condition.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing HEPA and Carbon based fan powered air filtration systems since 1985. These commercial grade, certified HEPA systems have helped thousands of individuals and organizations effectively remove or reduce the levels of harmful airborne contaminants and in many ways “transformed” their lives.

For many individuals and employees of operations that suffer from allergies or physical reactions to some of the more harmful airborne particulate the only relief they can get is either remove them from the source ( which is often difficult to do) or wear some type of mask or facial filtration device.

The majority of these harmful particulate are invisible to the naked eye and fall in the size range of less than 5 microns in size or even less than 1 micron. These particles are aspirated into the lungs and due to the small size often are not aspirated out. With constant exposure to these particulate over time the body starts to reject the contaminant source and the reactions are manifested  in the form of severe respiratory dysfunctions.

HEPA filters are designed to remove no less than 99.97% of all particles 0.3 microns and larger and approach similar effectiveness down to 0.12 microns. The HEPA filters used by Pure Air Systems are rated at 99.99% down to 0.3 microns. This highly effective filter media can remove a very high percentage of those airborne contaminants thus transforming the environment from harmful to good. With thousands of systems installed around the world since 1985, Pure Air Systems has become one of the most sought after HEPA based systems on the market today. Their ability to provide significant relief for their customers has been repeated over and over again.

The line of HEPA and Carbon based units offered by PAS, range in size from small portables that are about the size of a small toaster oven to units that are four feet long and 30″ high. Their air flow capacities range from less than 100 CFM to 2000 CFM. PAS now uses the newer ECM motors that are digitally controlled and operate at 120/240 50/60 Hz, so they can be used anywhere in the world in residential, commercial, institutional, medical or industrial applications.

As We Relive Our Lives In What We Tell You

Living in Florida gives you a different perspective on how many of the seniors and active retirees see the world around them. For many of them the new, digitally driven lifestyles of the younger generation seem worlds apart from their storied histories. Some of these individuals had lead remarkable lives, many served in WWII and a large number were immigrants from all four corners of the world.

One of the things this older generation loves is the process of reliving their lives through the stories they tell you. For many of them this is very cathartic. You can see their eyes light up when they take you on one of their journey’s for perhaps the 20th time. There are times, however, when this living in the past process becomes more of an obsession than just a stroll down memory lane.

This same process of remembering the past as a better time often carries over to  how they feel about new technologies and different ways of doing things. There is no doubt that the world has changed dramatically and that advances in technology are difficult for those of us that live with it everyday let alone someone who still uses mail and the land line telephone as their primary communications protocol.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade, certified HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985. The use of HEPA filters in the residential market was somewhat pioneered by PAS as previously most HEPA filters were used in the commercial and electronics industries. In 1985 few people outside the clean room or government really understood this technology yet it was fast becoming the filtration method of choice for reduction and removal of the small, respirable sized particles ( under 1 micron in size) that could be harmful to humans. Previously, a simple fiberglass or cotton based air filter or furnace filter were the norm. Simple to use, inexpensive and easy to find.

Pure Air Systems has been in business now for over 27 years selling HEPA based air filtration systems to the residential, commercial, institutional, medical and industrial markets. The adaption of this technology by the HVAC industry took many years. The ability to understand the rationale of using a fan powered, HEPA based unit in conjunction with an HVAC system seemed counter intuitive. Yet, today, the coupling of these two systems has become somewhat common place and has proven to be the most effective air filtration protocol for the residential market today.

The commercial and medical markets have always been fans of HEPA systems and in most cases could not operate without them. The need to understand technology and its benefits and features before you pass judgement on it because it looks different than what you are used to is a serious error. The past is the past. Remember the good times but adapt to the future. Resistance, as Darth Vader would say, is futile.

TOMBSTONE….”I told you I was sick”

Walking through an old grave yard the other day I noticed some unusual scripting on some of the tombstones. The typical “born date” “died date” were present on all of them but a few had more creative wording on the granite markers. One of the most popular epitaphs that has been written in dozens of languages world wide is…”I Told You I Was Sick.” I found this on two head stones. I’m sure the deceased relatives didn’t think it was funny, but somehow I think this comment says it all.

People complain about everything today. And with the help of social media they can do it 24/7  and have the world be their sounding board. For many people, complaining about their health or how certain issues affect their health has become their favorite hobby. However, in many instances these “cry wolf”  health concerns are actually valid complaints. Negative reactions to various foods, environmental conditions and industrial pollutants, both liquid and air, are more common than ever.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon based fan powered air filtration devices since 1985. Our experience in working with individuals, environmental specialists, Allergists, Physicians and Industrial Hygienists has provided us with a wealth of  practical application knowledge regarding the overall effectiveness of our HEPA filtration systems.

Individuals who either are pre-disposed to a specific type of allergen or pathogen or those who have weakened immune systems due to  constant contact with airborne contaminants (both particulate and gaseous) and who have used one of the Pure Air Systems HEPA units in their living and/or work environment, have achieved excellent results with the systems. In almost every case where an individual was experiencing some physical or respiratory distress from their polluted environment, the introduction of the PAS HEPA systems provided a minimum of 70% relief with the majority of individuals having virtually no symptoms at all.

While these results are not derived from a scientific, long-term study, the fact that people have continued to purchase the PAS products for over 27 years has proven the market recognizes the ability for the systems to excel and provide the performance as promised by Pure Air Systems.

For years individuals have complained about certain health issues that they believe are directly related to their living or work environment. Often these health issues are discarded by the medical profession as emotional or psychosomatic. While there are some instances where this is true, for the most part the symptoms and the suffering is real. Recently the medical profession has determined that the underlying cause for many of the “environmental illness” issues are now related to fibromyalgia…which can be treated to a certain extent with medication.  However, contact with our customers who have been diagnosed with this disease have found that it is the “easy out” diagnosis for everything environmental.

The fact is that those people who suffer from constant contact with any type of allergen, gaseous pollutant or pathogens continue to find more relief when living and working in a cleaner environment. Especially when they use one of the PAS HEPA systems. For individuals who do have an issue with the air they breathe contacting us now is better than having to write something too soon like, “I told you I was sick,” as your epitaph.

Environmental Illness

During the late 70′s and early 80′s people that experienced symptoms that resembled allergies, asthma and disorientation were classified as Environmentally Ill or EI for short. These symptoms were often associated with chemical sensitivities due to various types of building materials, carpet sizing, paints, varnishes and house hold cleaning chemicals. In most cases these materials would off-gas into the living space and the exposure to these chemicals over time would be deemed the cause of Environmental Illness.

One of the challenges with EI was the fact that the medical industry did not recognize this as a real illness. Most general practitioners would discount this illness as nothing more than an over reaction to what patients called strong odors and funny tastes in their mouths. The symptoms were so much like a typical allergic reaction or a cold or the flu that the normal treatment was antibiotics or antihistamines.

The Allergists, on the other hand, did recognize that there were significant symptoms and would treat this problem more aggressively usually by doing skin testing to attempt to isolate the allergen or contaminant to which the patient would react. Over time the Allergists began to identify the causes to in fact be from the living environments of their patients.

Fast forward to today. The building industry, both commercial and residential, have significantly changed the types of chemicals and additives used in the fabrication of most building materials. The green approach has been the mantra from the builders now for the past 10 years. There are better ventilation systems and a better understanding of how to make an office, room or home under positive pressure so that any off-gassing of any chemicals will be pushed out of the living environment while introducing small amounts of fresh, outside filtered air.

Founded in 1985, Pure Air Systems introduced one of the first commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon based fan powered air filtration systems for the removal of airborne allergens and pathogens in the residential and commercial markets. Many of the residential customers who purchased the PAS HEPA systems were categorized as environmentally ill. As far as they were concerned their homes were slowly killing them. Since the PAS systems were of all metal construction using only hospital grade components, the units did not contribute any chemicals or off-gassing materials to their environment. In addition to removing airborne particulate and gaseous pollutants, the units were able to introduce small amounts of outside, filtered fresh air to assist in diluting any gases trapped in the living environment.

Working with the EI group was the catalyst for PAS to develop larger and more effective HEPA and Carbon based systems as well as having a much better understanding of how to use the units for both introduction of fresh air and the use of positive pressure. Hell Opened Up And Put On Sale

Competition can be brutal. Being successful in business requires you to be part mystic, part Samurai warrior, part Bill Gates and sometimes…just plain lucky. The internet, social media, smart phone, tablets, viral marketing, YouTube are now tools that are used by most companies to market their products and services. Sure, the old stand-by’s like the newspaper, TV, radio and mailers are still used but their effectiveness is much harder to measure since you now have analytic’s and metric’s for social media to measure exactly who is getting your information and how they are using it. With ads, TV, radio and mailers it is difficult to know if you are actually reaching your target market.

This ability to utilize social media in has been a real boon to the small, entrepreneurial start-up companies…and this has not gone unnoticed by the big boys. With little or no up front costs, a small company with only a handful of employees can have a presence on the internet that looks as big as a Fortune 500 corporation. And, with the new metrics, analytics and inbound and outbound content processes, these small speedsters can bring a product or service to market, get in infused and become a household name in under six months in some cases.

With that said, there is still the old adage that says, “in the end all that really counts is performance.” You can tout your capabilities and  have a very professional online presence that captures the imagination of your target market. However, if, in the end, you don’t live up to your stated promises, your company will die a very slow and painful death. While the social media crowd can support and push your company and its products and/or services to people around the world in a short period of time. They can also destroy you just as quickly.

Since kids are computer, iPhone, smart phone, tablet, social media savvy before they are 10, their ability to create a company, blog site, website, webinar, or podcast is now a reality. This means companies will be competing with younger and younger entrepreneurs who will be on a par, if not slightly better, then their counter parts in the corporate world. One should seriously take note of this issue.

Pure Air Systems, has been manufacturing high end, commercial grade, certified HEPA air filtration systems since 1985. It has had a presence on the internet since 1994 and has not looked back since. There is no doubt that the ability to promote your product on the web has been a boon to many companies and in many cases is the only way people can find out about their products or services.

PAS has been a performance based company since its inception and today is recognized as one of the leaders in high performance HEPA air filtration. It continues to develop and promote products to meet the needs of an every changing market. The use of their website and social media like Facebook, Twitter and blogging, has truly enhanced their marketing programs and there is no doubt that the sales to international customers has been due in part to social media. But, in the end, the performance of the systems is still tantamount to the success of the company.

Using Positive Pressure With Air Filtration

The word pressure connotes a number of concepts. There is pressure to get things done on time, pressure cooking for vegetables and pressure to form a mold with an hydraulic machine. Pressure can be both negative and positive. The use of pressure as it relates to filtration is usually only associated with the medical or chip markets but has more recently been incorporated into the residential markets.

In the medical markets the use of HEPA filtered air for both general IAQ and for surgery suites and isolation rooms is standard. All hospital surgery rooms are pressurized using 100% HEPA filtered air so that if anyone enters the room during a procedure the air will push out through the door or opening not allowing any unfiltered or contaminated air to enter the room.

In the electronics, chip and optics manufacturing processes the same procedure is used. HEPA filtered air is pushed into the assembly and manufacturing rooms at high rates; often changing all the air in the room 100 times per hour. Again, the pressurization of the room eliminates any dust, dirt or airborne particulates from entering the sterile assembly environment even when the room is accessed from the outside.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing HEPA and Carbon based high end, commercial grade HEPA filtration systems since 1985. Their fan powered systems are designed to either attach to an existing HVAC system or they can be used as stand-alone units. Over the past 27 years of operation the customer base for PAS has moved away from Residential only to a 60/40 split between the commercial and residential markets. With commercial being the larger growth sector.

Pure Air Systems has numerous HEPA systems in the medical and electronics markets. Some or used for general air filtration but the majority are used for critical care or critical component processes. And almost all of these are used in positive pressure operations. The ability to incorporate the same positive pressure techniques used in the commercial markets into the residential and office markets has been an interesting project.

The introduction of outside, fresh filtered air into a residential or office structure is accomplished by adding one of the PAS HEPA based systems to the HVAC unit and introducing small amounts of outside air through the the HEPA/Carbon/Prefilter filtration package and slightly pressurize the living environment. This significantly reduces the entry of airborne allergens and pathogens into the living space and also reduces the levels of CO2 in the homes and offices.

The use of positive pressure for reduction of airborne contaminants is very effective and in most cases fairly inexpensive to accomplish. The Future Is The Past

With all of the new digital, hand-held devices coming out on the market on an almost daily basis, it is now possible to connect with anyone, anywhere at anytime..by voice, text or live video. The speed of change and the speed of adaptation are amazing..at least for some  people. Yet somehow with all this new found “connection” ability, one feels the need to stop and slow things down a bit just so we can catch our breathe. Are we moving fast because it is necessary or moving fast just because we can?

The home building industry is almost making some significant changes in its construction technology and techniques…except they are going back to the past to make their future brighter. The severe reduction in the values of residential and commercial properties and the lack of potential buyers has created huge challenges for the construction industry. Most people now believe the cost of housing and commercial properties has to come down to a more realistic level. Since property, for the most part, is no longer considered an investment, it now has to offer functionality and sustainability to make it attractive to future buyers.

Architects, designers, building construction managers, building materials manufacturers and environmental designers are now developing building structures that incorporate more of the past than the future. Smaller spaces, using more natural lighting and natural ventilation are now becoming the norm. Use of light weight, strong materials that require no maintenance, painting or resurfacing are now required. Water cisterns and wind and solar power are becoming a bigger part of the self-sustaining portions of the energy packages. Use of special window coverings and coatings can reduce cooling loads by up to 40% or more.

Smaller, yet more functional living space makes for a smaller carbon footprint and requires smaller, more efficient heating and cooling systems. It also means a smaller IAQ system for residential and commercial properties. The newer building designs require ventilation and introduction of fresh, filtered outside air as part of the entire HVAC/IAQ/Ventilation package. This type of process requires a certain kind of filtration technology and at least one company can provide this packaged system.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing HEPA and Carbon based, certified, commercial grade, fan powered filtration systems since 1985.  These systems, which include units that range in volume from less than 50 CFM  to 2000 CFM are designed to be used either as stand-alone units or in conjunction with HVAC systems. They are also designed to bring in small amounts of outside, filtered fresh air in addition to filtering all the air in the environment. These units utilize the latest in fan motor technology as they are all ECM motors that use up to 50% less power than standard induction motors.

Pure Air Systems have been incorporated into these new building designs for some time. They are high performance units that have shown to be extremely durable and require minimum maintenance. The all steel fabrication means these units will be around as long as the structure is standing. Sustainability, energy efficiency and performance are the reason engineers, contractors and individuals alike continue to use the PAS systems.

Wired

The word wired has a number of meanings. It can be used to describe how one feels after drinking four cups of coffee in an hour or after eating two or three Twinkies for lunch ( not recommended). Sometimes wired is used as a prefix term such as “that guy or girl was really wired in.”  Meaning tuned in or right on really understands the message. It is also the name of a very popular “avant garde” magazine that describes the future of technology.  Wired is a positive word and not often used to describe a company, but we will do that now.

Pure Air Systems started making HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems in 1985. They philosophy of the company was then and still is today, to make the best commercial grade, certified HEPA systems on the market and incorporate only the best, most reliable components in the fabrication and assembly of the systems.

Early on its development, PAS was wired into the whole issue of what was then called “Environmental Illness,” or EI. Back in the early 80′s most building materials for homes, offices and schools were still being made with formaldehyde laced glues and substrates along with very limited fresh air ventilation for their HVAC systems. PAS was very involved with a number of organizations that were very vocal about the continuing health problems associated with short term and long term exposure to airborne gases and particulates.

Because HEPA filters, at that time, were still primarily used only in the electronics and hospital markets, the average  homeowner had little knowledge of the overall capabilities of what HEPA filters could do. And, PAS was very wired in to the capabilities of using granular activated carbon and blended medias for the reduction and removal gaseous pollutants. PAS experimented with a number of suppliers of carbon to find the best carbon product that would both work well in their systems as well as provide the needed performance demanded by their customers.

Since the major distribution for the PAS systems early on was using HVAC contractors, Pure Air Systems was wired in to the issues with the lack of fresh air in most building structures and the direct relationship between this issue and environmental illness. As a result of these business relationships PAS was able to develop a concept using its wide range of HEPA based air filtration systems to allow for both total filtration of the indoor environment as well as the introduction of fresh, filtered outside air. This partial by-pass concept has proven to be one of the most successful methods of providing an environmentally safe and healthy indoor environment in homes, offices, schools, hospitals and small industrial facilities.

Leap Year

A leap year is a year containing one additional day in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year. So this year , 2012, we will have 366 days instead of 365 days. What does that really mean?  According to Irish tradition a man who receives a marriage proposal from a woman on February 29 must accept it. Or if you are born on 2/29 does that mean you only have  a birthday every four years? And if you are married on the 29th of February do you only have a wedding anniversary every fourth year? Interesting thought.

With an event happening only every four years we only think about it during that specific time frame. We never talk about leap year other than during leap year and then only on one day…Feb. 29th.  Yet being born on that date or married on that date…or even dying on that date could have a significant impact on the events of your life and lives of the people around you.

Being exposed to a particularly virulent  airborne pathogen, chemical compound or allergen on any given day can also alter your life forever. Our experience in dealing with individuals who suffer from chronic illnesses by being exposed to one of these is interesting to say the least. Since Pure Air Systems was founded in 1985, literally 40% of our residential customers use our HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems to help them cope with continuing respiratory and sensitivity issues caused by a one time or over time exposure.

Because many of these individuals have had their immune systems compromised by these airborne incidents and have difficulty living and working in environments that most people would consider safe and harmless. For example, small amounts of dust or pollen or even odors from dish washing detergent can significantly affect these immuno-suppressed individuals. The ability to remove small concentrations of odors and gasesous pollutants as well as minute amounts of sub-micron particulate is the key to helping these individuals.

Pure Air Systems commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon air filtration systems are recognized as some of the best high performance filtration systems on the market today. The HEPA filters in our systems are some of the only mechanical methods of removing the small, sub-micron airborne allergens and pathogens. And the carbon media is all commercial grade and designed to adsorb high concentrations of odors and gaseous compounds. Together, these filters in our units offer the best chance to allow these individuals to lead a fairly normal life in both their homes and at work.
